Historians and Academics from Greece, Israel and the United States participating in the workshop attempted to approach the historical aspects of a community which was at the same time open yet full of internal diversifications. Light was also shed on the Jewish Community’s close relationships with its Christian and Muslim neighbours.

The historian, Paris Papamichos Chronakis, member of the Group for the Study of the History of the Jews of Greece, stated that the discussions identified the multiple relations connecting the Jews with Thessaloniki, the great internal diversifications of their community and the richness of the archive material that allows us to approach the history of Jews of Thessaloniki and integrate it into various contexts, such as the history of the Mediterranean, the history of the Ottoman Empire, the history of the New Greek Nation and the history of the Jewish Diaspora.

The workshop included ten papers and a plenary speech by Professor Aron Rodrigue (Stanford University) regarding the relations of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki with the other Communities of the city in the years of the Ottoman Empire and the crucial contribution of the Community to the city’s commercial development. On the last day of the meeting, the “Greek Jewish Shoah Testimonies” database was presented.

The workshop was organised in the context of a special issue of the Jewish History Journal on the Jews of Salonica, which is scheduled to be released in 2013.
