20th CENTURY ORTHODOX THEOLOGY AND ITS CONVERSATIONS WITH THE WEST

On completing the course the students will be able to:

  • understand main second level theological notions of the course “Twentieth Century Orthodox Conversations with the West”
  • understand the influence of Orthodox mission to the West
  • gain an understanding of the meaning of the experience of emigration for Orthodox theologians in the West
  • critically evaluate the reasons for the development of the Neo-Patristic synthesis
  • critically evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the Neo-Patristic synthesis
  • analyze and critically evaluate the place of Sophiology and a theology of beauty in Orthodox theology in conversation with the West
  • develop a critical awareness of the role of hesychasm in the development of an Orthodox political theology and social engagement through conversations with the West
  • understand and critically evaluate the influence of positive and negative encounters with the West on the development of Orthodox theology in the twentieth century
